My mother is 75 years old and she spends a great deal of time home alone during the day when I am working. I work 5 days a week, full-time – leaving the house each morning at 7.45am and do not get home until just after 6pm when I get in and get the dinner ready for both of us. She is unable to get out of the house without my assistance because of her poor physical condition and, because she is so adamant that she will not learn to use a computer, she spends her days reading a little or watching television - without any social interaction with others. She complains bitterly to me that she is so lonely and I can see that she is now getting very depressed because she is feeling isolated. She says she is very frustrated that she cant do the things she used to do. Instead, she is starting to spend hours sleeping during the day because she’s so bored and she often misses meals - which is not good. I feel very guilty but I have to work full-time for financial reasons. Any suggestions for making things better for her?
